Folk Beliefs and Temples

by pnec_admin

Hakka people believe in two major deities, and accordingly temples have been built in Nam Chung. In the early years, the Tin Hau Temple (天后宮) on the shore of Nam Chung was only a small altar by the roadside. In the 1990s, it was reconstructed into a formal temple with a Guanyin Hall (觀音堂), where villagers and many people from different places come and pray for calmness, peace, and prosperity. On the lower floor of the Tin Hau Temple is the Dragon King Temple (龍王廟), which is rarely encountered in Hong Kong. It is dedicated to the Dragon King of Zhenhai (鎮海龍王) and the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas (四海的龍王), where people pray for good weather.

There is, however, a much older center of religion in Nam Chung, which is the Hip Tin Temple (協天宮) built in Cheng Uk. The temple is dedicated to Kwan Tai (關帝), who is honored for his righteousness and might, and appreciated for his wealth, wisdom and loyalty. The Hip Tin Temple faces the estuary of Nam Chung River from a distance to ward off evil spirits. In the past, the temple also served as the center for solving disputes and coordinating affairs for nearby villages. In recent years, the temple has been rebuilt, a project that is still in progress.
