Inheriting the aesthetics of living simplicity from the Natural Building Movement (自然建築運動) of the 1960s and 1970s in the United States, materials for construction are mostly sourced locally and assembled using traditional craftsmanship. We also emphasize the importance of de-professionalization and community participation, which is common in eco-villages and suburbs around the world. After the strong Typhoon Mangkhut (颱風山竹) in 2018, rebuilding the community kitchen in Nam Chung became the very first experimental natural architecture in Hong Kong. It uses bamboo as the structure, grass as the walls, and mud as the surface finish. With more than a hundred people involved, the entire structure was completed in two months. Subsequent projects included a driftwood bench, a mud oven, and a bamboo tenon door. Members of the team have also built bamboo pavilions and rammed earth benches for other places in Hong Kong.
